Helping your child take ownership of healthy sleep
Sleep affects mood, concentration, health and emotional regulation. In Hack 8, your child is learning the difference between DON'T sleep - staying up despite being tired, and CAN'T sleep - being in bed but struggling to fall asleep. They're experimenting with an earlier bedtime, learning to reduce pressure around sleep, getting worries out of their head before bed, and developing a more sleep-friendly routine and environment.
Has bedtime become a battle in your house?
If your child CAN'T sleep because their mind becomes busy at bedtime, try a ten-minute “brain empty” before bed. Give them a notebook to write down worries, reminders or things they need to do tomorrow, then leave them there. The aim is to teach the brain that bed is for sleeping, not for doing tomorrow's planning or tonight's worrying.
