Helping your child understand how habits change
In Hack 10, your child is learning a practical ten-step approach to breaking unwanted habits. They explore triggers, motivation, realistic goals, changing their environment, finding replacement behaviours, getting support, managing urges, celebrating progress and learning from setbacks. Most importantly, they're learning that slipping up doesn't mean they've failed, changing habits takes time, patience and repeated practice.
What's underneath the habit?
Don't rely only on willpower. Change the environment. If a phone constantly distracts your child during homework, put it somewhere else. If certain snacks are the problem, don't leave them sitting out. If gaming regularly runs over, agree the stopping time before they start. Sometimes self-control isn't about becoming better at resisting temptation, it's about having less temptation to resist.
