Helping your child move away from all-or-nothing thinking
In Hack 6, your child is learning to move away from extremes such as “I have to get this completely right” or “I don't care, so why bother?” and towards a healthier middle. They explore balance in school and learning, mistakes and wrongdoing, body image and health, organisation, hygiene and other areas of everyday life. The message is that they can care, try and grow without demanding perfection from themselves.
Are we accidentally encouraging perfectionism?
Listen for all-or-nothing language: “I completely messed it up.” “I'm terrible at this.” “There's no point trying.” Rather than simply disagreeing, ask: “Was it really a complete disaster - or was there some good and some not so good?” Help your child move away from perfect-or-pointless thinking and towards the more realistic middle.
