Helping your child build their perseverance muscle
Life often requires us to do things that are boring, difficult or uncomfortable. In Hack 7, your child is learning to challenge the “Can't Be Bothered” mindset and recognise that “I don't feel like doing this” doesn't mean “I can't do this”. They're learning to tolerate boredom and discomfort, keep going when something takes effort, and build their I.C.B.B. muscle: “I can do hard things. I can do boring. I can be bothered.”
Are we making life too easy for our children?
Choose one small thing you normally do for your child that they are capable of doing themselves — and don't do it. Not as a punishment or a lecture. If you hear, “I can't be bothered,” try: “I know. You don't have to feel like doing it. You just have to discover that you can.” Small amounts of resistance help build the I.C.B.B. muscle.
