Helping your child look after their mood
Everyone has times when they feel low, irritable or simply not themselves. In Hack 2, your child is learning that although we can't simply choose to “be happy”, there are things we can do to influence our mood. They're exploring activity and movement, meaningful and fulfilling activities, kindness and gratitude, as well as how the way we speak to ourselves can affect how we feel. They've also met the Critical Parrot- that harsh inner voice that can attack us when things go wrong, and learnt the Best Friend Technique for responding to themselves more kindly
Do we need to worry every time our teenager is unhappy?
If your child says, “I'm such an idiot. I mess everything up,” rather than immediately arguing with them, ask: “Would you speak to your best friend like that?” This uses the Critical Parrot and Best Friend Technique your child is learning. Help them notice when their inner voice is harsher than they would ever be to somebody they care about.
