Helping your child build friendships that bring out the best in them
Friendships can be one of the best parts of growing up, but they can also bring pressure, insecurity and jealousy. In Hack 1, your child is learning how to recognise healthy and unhealthy friendships, how to build good friendships and how to feel more confident around others. They're also learning to spot common confidence traps, manage jealousy and comparison, and understand that good friendships should allow them to be themselves rather than constantly trying to fit in.
Is being popular the same as having good friendships?
When your child says, “They all think I'm weird,” instead of immediately saying, “Of course they don't!”, try asking: “How do you know that's what they're thinking?” Mastering Your Mind calls this Mind Reading, assuming we know what someone else is thinking. The aim isn't to tell your child they're wrong, but to help them recognise that what they think someone thinks isn't necessarily a fact.
