Parents Hack 5 - Taming Your Anger

Helping your child understand anger before it takes over

What Your Child is Learning

Anger is a normal emotion, but what we do with it matters. In Hack 5, your child is learning to recognise triggers and early warning signs, including HALTS - Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired and Stressed. They're exploring how thoughts can fuel anger, using the Terrible Scale to put situations into perspective, avoiding negative labels, considering other people's perspectives and developing practical ways to calm down before anger takes over.

When your child's anger makes YOU angry

Try This At Home

When something feels enormous, try the Terrible Scale. Ask: “On a scale from 1 to 100, how terrible is this really?” You might also ask: “Will this still bother you in three years' time?” The aim isn't to dismiss what happened. It's to help your child put it into perspective when anger has made it feel much bigger than it is.
